The usual explanations for why cyclists shave, road rash, easier massage, pro tribalism, are all real and all beside the point that shows up on the clock. Shaving trades ten minutes and a razor for a saving that sits in the same range as equipment costing hundreds. On the watts-per-dollar table that should govern smart spending, it sits near the top, alongside your position and your clothing, and well above the deep wheels people buy first.
So if you are going to do it, do it for the reason that survives the wind tunnel, not the locker room. It will not transform your race, and anyone promising a guaranteed minute is selling the ceiling as the floor. But it is close to free, it stacks on top of every other aero gain rather than overlapping it, and it is one of the few upgrades you already own the tools for. Shave because it is the cheapest watt on the menu, and skip the part where you pretend it is about the massages.
