Your $4 Gel Is Mostly Sugar and Salt. Here's the 7-Eleven Version

Ultra runners win on pickles, chips, and flat Coke. Triathletes pay ten times as much for the same three ingredients.

A triathlete's nutrition shelf is a small fortune: engineered gels, drink mixes with patented carb ratios, electrolyte sticks, salt capsules. Meanwhile the athletes going the longest and hardest, ultramarathon runners, are at aid stations eating pickles, potato chips, gummy candy, and flat Coke. Both groups are doing exactly the same thing. One of them is paying ten times as much for it.

Strip endurance fueling to its parts and there are only three: carbohydrate, sodium, and fluid. Carbohydrate is what your muscles and brain burn, sodium is what your sweat dumps and your gut needs to pull water in, and fluid carries both. A four-dollar gel is roughly 25 grams of sugar, a little sodium, some flavor, and packaging. That is not an insult to the product. It is just what it is.

The premium products do have one genuine piece of science. Mixing glucose and fructose lets you absorb more carbohydrate per hour than glucose alone, because the two sugars use different doorways into the bloodstream and do not compete. Glucose alone tops out around 60 grams an hour; add fructose and you can push past 90. That is real, and it matters when you are fueling hard. But you do not need a lab to get it. Plain table sugar is glucose and fructose in a one-to-one ratio. So is the sugar in regular Coke, in most gummy candy, and in fruit. The molecule is not the expensive part. The dosing and the gut-friendly form are.

Be fair about what the branded stuff actually buys you, though. Precise, repeatable dosing: a gel tells you exactly how many grams of carb and milligrams of sodium you are getting, where a handful of candy is a guess. Gut-friendliness at high intake: at racing carb rates the engineered ratios and low-irritation forms genuinely reduce stomach trouble, and random soda and candy at 100 grams an hour can wreck an untrained gut. And convenience: a gel rides in a pocket, a banana does not. If you are chasing the absolute ceiling of carbohydrate intake, those things are worth paying for.

For most age-groupers fueling at a sane 40 to 70 grams an hour, the gas-station version works, costs a fraction, and is often easier on the stomach precisely because it is real food. The one rule that beats any brand: train your gut on whatever you will race, because the fastest way to blow up is to try a new fuel, branded or not, on race day. And when a company tells you their specific product is the only thing that works, remember that they sell that product. The carbohydrate-and-sodium science is independent and real. The "it has to be ours" part is marketing.
